Wedding cakes can be a tremendous expense at a wedding. This decorative non-edible one is made entirely of ribbons. A great variation of this idea is to make only the top tier out of ribbon and the rest out of a real cake. That gives you a wonderful keepsake of your special day.
Materials:

4” thick Styrofoam cake tiers in 14”, 10” 8” and 6” diameters
1 ½” diameter by 1” high Styrofoam spacers to separate the tiers
4” wide satin ribbon for wrapping the tiers
1” wide satin ribbon for wrapping the risers.
5/8” wide satin ribbon to the basket weave tops
Silver lined glass bead
Sequin pins
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Assorted ribbon roses in appropriate colours for the wedding.

Technique:
a) Create the basket weave pattern on the tops of the layers by alternating contrasting shades of white. We used pure white and a silky white for a subtle effect.
b) At the corners of all of the squares created by the basket weave place silver lined glass bead using the sequin pins.
c) When the tiers are complete cover the sides with the wide satin ribbon, hot gluing it in place. Cover the spaces the same way.
d) Assemble the cake, cascading the ribbon roses around the tiers as a real cake would. Insert ribbon leaves to fill the gaps where necessary.
